Vitex agnus-castus

Can be planted in a planter

Roots are not a problem

Fragrant leaves

 

Cultivars:

‘Silver Spire’ and ‘Alba’ white flowers
‘Rosea’ pink flowers
‘Shoal Creek’ purple blooms
‘Purpurea’ delicate lilac flowers

 

Prune for tree and multi-trunked tree

Vase-shaped, drooping branches. Thorny. Breakage: resistant

10 to 15 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide

Crown uniformity: irregular
Crown shape: vase, round
Crown density: moderate
Growth rate: fast
Texture: fine

Wide range of soils. Prefers loose, well-drained soil on the dry side. Susceptible to root rot.

Full sun or part shade

 

Blooms: late spring through fall

Leaves are sage-scented gray-green, gray bark, blocky trunk

Great background for brighter-colored plants

Attracts wildlife; butterflies and hummingbirds. Small birds like seeds.

 

Not messy, but has many seedlings
